Doc Watson Dead: Folk Musician Dies At 89 - Mastery Of Surgery

Doc Watson, the blind Grammy-award winning folk musician whose mountain-rooted sound was embraced by generations and whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world, died Tuesday at a North Carolina hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his manager. He was 89.Watson died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was hospitalized recently after falling at his home in Deep Gap, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He underwent abdominal surgery while in the hospital and had been in critical condition for several days. Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

Fahey learned to play country-style guitar in the footsteps of Hank Williams and Eddy Arnold at the age of 14, inspired by the recordings of "Blind" Willie Johnson, and other blues greats. At BMI, we favor the hand-sewn technique (I learnt this in 2006 watching K Higa) of pouch-jejunal anastomosis in the bariatric operation of lap gastric bypass. The procedure shows the initial assessment of the suitability of the gastric pouch formation, followed by the entire infracolic part of the operation. The jejunum is measured at 75-100 cm from the Ligament of Treitz an transected. The distal (alimentary) limb is taken up towards the stomach and a jejuno-jejunal anastomosis performed at 100 cm (150 cm in some) between the proximal (biliopancreatic) limb and the rest of the small bowel. The staple lines are reinforced with stitches that also close the mesenteric defects to prevent internal hernia formation. The pouch is next formed by serial firings of the blue load of the stapler. The stoma is hand-sewn with 3-0 Vicryl and sized at 18 mm over a gastric tube. The stoma is 4-layered and leak-proof. As they say, don't try this at home (suturing mastery advisable)! ;-)

The Overlight Series - Part 5 -Healing On The New Planet Earth

Mastery Of Surgery :
Modern medical science in our society has risen to an almost god-like status among us. We are running to the doctor at any sign of physical or mental discomfort. Relinquishing all responsibility for our healing to the medical system. It seems that this practise by all accounts is stretching the traditional health care system to the point of breaking.

The intent of this article series called "The Overlight Process" is to view healing from a totally different perspective putting the power back to the individual where I believe it belongs. Instead of treating an imbalance with pills or surgery, Overlight looks at disease from a belief that these conditions are presented to us for the reason of attaining mastery of the primary life lesson and is a necessary part of life.

As previously stated, I believe that this total shift of perspective from giving our power away to doctors or healers of any kind to one of taking personal responsibility for ourselves in all aspects of life is happening right now.

Mastery Of Surgery :The Overlight Series - Part 5 -Healing On The New Planet Earth

I like to believe that deep down we feel that relying on the medical system to solve our mental and physical conditions is inherently unnatural, giving impetus to the ever increasing use of alternative healing modalities that give us back the power and subsequently the responsibility for our own healing, like Overlight.

Being an Overlight facilitator comes with a set of parameters to follow that are a necessary part for anyone who practises Overlight or any other alternative healing.

These 12 suggestions allow facilitators to keep balanced while creating space for others to heal themselves:

1. Healing can only take place with each person holding their own power. The first and most important concern is to find ways to facilitate others without taking their power from them.

2. All facilitation must be by request. It is not possible to facilitate healing without their specific request.

3. It is only possible to facilitate healing with the highest intent. There is no secrets. and must allow our intentions to be fully seen.

4. As healers we understand that illness is not always a sign that something is wrong. Illness sometimes facilitates change and is only one state of health.

5. It is important to always speak our truth but in doing so know that truth is always a work in progress. We have to leave room for growth in the words we speak. We must honor all flavors of the truth no matter how different they seem from our own. Allowing other people to stand in their truth without being threatened by ours. Competition is an illusion of separateness that is no longer valid.

6. We must check our egos often and examine truthfully the motivations for our words and actions.

7. We must practise the art of discernment in making choices without judgement and only choose what things and ideas that nurture us.

8. Not be afraid to say "I do not know". Make space for empowerment of all and that none of us has all the answers but together, all of us has access to all the answers.

9. Know that the true strength of a healer lies in our vulnerability. If we share our mistakes openly then our perceived weaknesses will become our greatest strengths.

10. We must remember that we have no control over the thoughts that come into our head but have complete control over what stays there. Take responsibility for becoming the master of our thoughts and share the process with others around us.

11. Know that we all have the same base motivation. We are all looking for answers to the major life questions and remember that the easiest way to do that is to do it together.

12. Know that it is not possible to heal another. It is only possible to offer them the space in which to heal themselves, if they choose. We will not take responsibility for the healing of anyone but ourself. Responsibility is the balance of power.We help people to take responsibility for their own healing so that they may hold their true power.

These suggestions were designed for Overlight facilitators but I believe they can hold for anyone who's purpose is to facilitate healing of others. This is the future of healing in what I call the new planet earth.

I hope that if you read all 5 parts of this series that all or even one sentence rang true for you and you could relate the information to something that you have experienced in your life. My intent with writing this was to offer an alternative for people who believe that there is more to this human experience than just getting by or enduring everyday life with that empty sentiment of "Is this all there is?"

I truly believe the concept that we are not just human beings wrestling with the idea of spirituality but, in fact, we are spiritual beings coping with the process of a human awakening. This concept give us the knowledge that there are higher truths about life waiting for us to discover. Now that, to me, is reason enough to celebrate and enjoy every second of it.

Dr House Super Cash Flow Workshop

Okay everyone, now I have been trying to find this guy for quite a while now and finally thanks to my friend Linh who finally gave me some intel regarding his whereabouts, I was told that Dr House was holding a workshop for one day at the end of the week. As soon as I got the e-mail, I had to sign up. Thankfully, the first few entrants were able to attend the event free of charge and I was among the first (I literally signed up minutes after getting the e-mail from Linh).

So who exactly is this Dr House and why was I anxious to find him? Well just to clarify, his name is Gordon Ku and in fact he doesn't really have anything to do with the Dr House we know from the TV show House MD other than the fact that he is, as you may have guessed, a doctor himself. Now I didn't get excited about attending a workshop about medical practice all day on a Sunday - the name Dr House is actually a nickname that he got simply from the fact that he is a medical doctor who also teaches about PROPERTY. To avoid confusion, he doesn't teach about applying medical practice in buying houses or investment strategies when performing surgery - that's certainly not the case here.

A bit of background on Gordon, he was actually a medical student who became a doctor and practiced for several years (he was also into surgery at some point) until he realized that this career path just didn't seem to give the kind of lifestyle that he wanted. Finally waking up to the realization that property was the means for him to achieve his goals, Gordon has immersed himself to the point where he has achieved a level of proficiency, perhaps even a level of mastery in terms of buying, investing and deal-making strategies.

Now I bet some of you are probably thinking, but oh what's the difference between him and the other property giants like Otton, Crutchfield, Rolton, etc.?
I've heard them all speak and yes they're all very good. I am however, a little slow when it comes to these things and although what they talk about are very similar (vendor finance, options, etc.), they have slight variations in their teaching style and perhaps the timing for me did not have me ready to take in the information at that time. And also, I don't really have 5-6k in my back pocket to sign up to a course or two (which I'm sure are very good) to teach me the works.

Anyway, the first time I met Gordon a few months ago during one of Linh's Zero Capital meetings which I am a regular attendant of. The topic on the night was property, as you may have guessed. Although it was a rather short presentation (about 20 minutes, compared to the usual 2 hours to a full day with your average property workshops), Dr House was very straight-forward, literal and also something quite rare in a presentation like this - entertaining. I don't know for sure, it could probably the way he explains things but all I knew from then is that this guy definitely knows his stuff and explains it in a way that slow people like me can better digest the information. Another different thing about Dr House is that he didn't exactly fire a sales pitch at you to buy his workshop right at the end, as most typical 'expert' usually does. He of course, did mention that anybody who would want to learn more in depth stuff to come and see him.

So I finally made it to Dr House workshop, on an early Sunday morning all the way in South Yarra. I knew it was going to be worth it. Interestingly enough, I met some old friends there along the way from other groups who have heard about the workshop. It does pay off to network a lot, so I know I'm never alone.

The venue itself was at a Punt Hill conference room in the middle of an alley within South Yarra. Conveniently enough, it was a Sunday and street parking was free for me and the venue was pretty easy to find. Although I wouldn't call it 5-star prestige Crown Towers gourmet, the venue was definitely sufficient for the intended purpose. There was adequate seating and the room was a reasonable size so that we can hear the speaker's voice without him needing a microphone or him yelling his vocal chords out.

Okay, so we fire away with the seminar - of course as you would expect, we begin with a quick introduction about Gordon's background (pretty much a slightly more detailed version of the background I just mentioned about him), who he is and why he does what he does. It was pretty straightforward.

Naturally of course, we took a few minutes for a bit of goal-setting. We obviously had a purpose for attending a workshop like that and something we wanted to gain. Now I myself am not of property background whatsoever and I'm actually a network marketer (as you may have guessed, I do like to market stuff to my networks) but somewhere down the line, I have always felt that I wanted to eventually dip a little into the property field. I don't want to just live in a house - I want to make money from them too. Also just the feeling of owning houses or properties in general (No, I don't like staring at bricks all day or anything) was something I've always wanted to experience somewhere down the line.

Of course, as Gordon explains it quite simply: Lifestyle = Time + Money. I like how he refers back to this more often as we went along. The whole purpose of us learning all these strategies and techniques - it's for the lifestyle, guys.

Eventually, Gordon got straight to the point. Unlike most other seminars, who usually bombard you with mindset and personal development stuff (not to say there's a lack of it in this case nor am I saying that it isn't important), we dived into the strategies right away.

I am not going to go into great detail into each, but Gordon pointed out to us in excess of about 11 different strategies. He revealed to us a few concepts about a balanced property folio in which you have both long-term high growth properties as well as income producing properties to balance out the port folio in case some properties are negatively geared.

We then dived into other strategies like Vendor Terms Contracts in which we add value to a property by making it easier and more convenient for buyers who probably have no deposit, or cannot get a loan, bad credit and so on.

Gordon explains it with such simplicity and with easy-to-follow steps that people can easily digest and take in which look as easy as this:

Step 1: Find and acquire property
Step 2: Find and qualify a buyer
Step 3: Sell to buyer on Vendor Finance

This could be a bit less detailed version of what he explained (I was just reading from my notes, actually), but most of his explanations were pretty simple no-brainers. I also love the simplicity and the way he explains things in a rather comical tone. What I mean is, he then introduces a Step 4 to this strategy. What is step 4? The room is silent.

Step 4 = LIFESTYLE.

Holiday photos then come up on the screen I nearly fell off my seat laughing. This guy is awesome.

I felt like he was talking directly to me. There were at least more than thirty people in the room but I felt like he was talking to just me.

To simplify things even more, Gordon takes us through a very simple real-estate formula that sums up the process:

Acquire Property -> Add Value -> Cash Up

Great. But wait, what's after that? Yes, you guessed it - LIFESTYLE. Although I'm not going to get into too much detail as those of you who did not attend should have attended anyway, Gordon provides us with excellent strategies that involve no-money-down approaches, actual ownership of the property, and others where you do take control of the property, but not actually owning it officially with the title under your name. He also touched upon options, joint venture strategies, rent-to-buy, renovations, and also different combinations of each. So much information and knowledge coupled with the ease and simplicity was squeezed into this one-day seminar that I am surprised (and ultimately very thankful) that I got in for free.

Okay, so some of you might think - hang on, so he just taught deal-making strategies, is that it? My friends, there's another part to this workshop that made it so worth getting up at 0700 in the morning and traveling all the way to South Yarra for. Dr House was fun enough to make us play a cash flow game which is designed to help us get a little bit of a feel about looking at deals and have a look at what happens in the market.

Basically, there were all these property deals posted all over the walls of the venue. These property deals were all actually based on real-life deals that were made by either Gordon himself or his students. We had to form small groups, who we would treat as our joint venture partners and start scanning the walls for good deals and compete against the other groups. Funnily enough, my stingy partners and I went straight after the majority no-money-down deals straight away. Although we did take a few 'loans' and lost money on certain terms, we were able to make some good profit based on a combination of deals over a three-term period. It was a very funny and enjoyable exercise as well as very creative, I have to admit. I'd give another thumbs-up to Gordon for this one.

Although our investment group didn't end up winning, the winners received some pretty cool prizes such as Donald Trump books and Dr House books too.

Anyway, remember when I mentioned that this seminar did not lack any of the mindset and personal development angles? This stuff actually came in the end, which was a fresh change. Again, with any strategy, technique or skill, none of these will ever be useful to anybody if they don't get the mindset part right. No matter what industry or field you're in, if you are not mentally conditioned to be able to apply the skills you learn, you either go down hard and fast, or you won't even begin at all.

As with every other industry, success is 80% psychology and 20% strategy. I can validate this myself in my own fields and endeavors. Although Gordon didn't bombard us with any hypnosis or NLP stuff too much, he did have us do some exercises on physiology and mood-management, which is crucial for mind-setting and personal development.

Overall, I'd say this guy definitely over-delivers on his promises as is validated by the ton of information that he shared within just one day. Although he did offer us some further mentoring options and even free consultations, he didn't exactly pitch us another 5-6k workshop and have us rush to the back and sign up.

I definitely recommend you listen to this guy if you're serious about property, and even if property isn't your main field, who can refuse the lifestyle that this pathway has to offer?

We conceive our children but don't design them, especially these days now that our influence is diluted by so many other influences and we have more respect for our offspring's autonomy than did past parents.

About half way through raising my children I consolidated my aspirations for them down to just three. If I were granted three wishes they would arrive at adulthood:

1. Intact: Their options open, no bridges burned. No tattoos on their foreheads that would prevent them from becoming doctors or bankers, no debilitating sports injuries, drug-stunting or lost fingers that would keep them from a career in auto mechanics or brain surgery, no criminal records or addictions that limited their career and lifestyle choices before they were old enough to make lasting ones.

2. Already masterful: At absolutely anything, DJ-ing, Dungeons and Dragons, skate-boarding, classical piano, Guitar Hero, cartooning, writing. Anything with a steep learning curve that demonstrated to them the true size of an investment in getting good at something, and demonstrated that they could make it up a steep learning curve.

3. Meta-confident: Able to extrapolate from whatever discipline they gained mastery in to any other discipline. Call it meta-self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is confidence that you can master something because you've mastered something similar: "I can fix cars because I can fix bicycles." Meta-self-efficacy is confidence that you could master anything because you have experienced the long road to mastery in anything else: "I could become a brain surgeon because I know from mastering Guitar Hero what it takes to get good at something."

There's been such a proliferation of lifestyles and career paths. We need to give our children practice making choices among them. Otherwise, when confronted with adult career choices, they'll choose naïvely. In the tough times ahead, they can't afford many false starts.

They need a rehearsal round. Imagine if we told our children at nine, "Here's how it goes. You get a few years now to explore and dabble to check out all sorts of hobbies and disciplines. Then, by eleven, you'll need to choose something you want to get very good at. Don't think career; think fun, satisfaction, and commitment because we're going to hold you to it. In addition to school and chores, your responsibility from 11 to 18 is to get as good at your chosen discipline as you possibly can. No going through the motions. We'll be expecting big things from you because you are expecting them. You will be the one who chose which tiger to grab by the tail so we expect you to hold on tight."

"By the time you're 18, you can do whatever you want in both senses of the phrase. That is, you'll have your freedom to choose what you want to do, and you'll know, through your experience gaining expertise, that you are capable of doing what you set your mind to doing."
